Codes in California Death Indexes
« on: Saturday 01 December 12 13:17 GMT (UK) »
I believe that I have found my grandfather on the California Death Indexes, but there are several letters and numbers that are a mystery to me.

The entry reads Tweedle John W  H  1  52   70   11 13 30  30     59036

I understand the first 2 items (surname, first name) and guess that the 'W' stands for William, his middle name.

'52' is his age at death, and 11 13 30 (13th Nov 1930) is the date of death.

However, I am stumped by 'H', '1' and '70'

Can anyone help to decipher please?

Ruth

70 is a county code.  You can see the list of them here - http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/gen/ca/_vitals/cacodes.htm#CO

This shows what the column headings are:  http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/gen/ca/_vitals/ca___de930dat1.htm

The codes are explained on the first page of the volume [image #3].  In your example, 'H' is the initial of the spouse of the deceased person and '70' is the county code, in this case Los Angeles County.
Wiltshire:  Banks, Taylor
Somerset:  Duddridge, Richards, Barnard, Pillinger
Gloucestershire:  Barnard, Marsh, Crossman
Bristol:  Banks, Duddridge, Barnard
Down:  Ennis, McGee
Wicklow:  Chapman, Pepper
Wigtownshire:  Logan, Conning
Wisconsin:  Ennis, Chapman, Logan, Ware
Maine:  Ware, Mitchell, Tarr, Davis

Many thanks Erato & shellyesq for your quick replies.

John & wife Harriet were certainly in Los Angeles for the 1930 census, so all fits together very well.

Hi Ruth,

This does appear to be the John you are looking for. On his death certificate his middle name is listed as William and his wife is Harriet. Father is  John W and mother Ellen Lucy Withers.
