Yes i know about the ancestry Reades much of it is wrong!!

Henry's is listed as Storekeeper on his marraige to Esther 1879

Nothing comes up for an Ernest Alfred Read/e, Reed, Reid ..... there is one Alfred Evans in 1893 but he is living in Hobson Street and is a Labourer.

1874 birth for Henry Embling EVANS was reg. March quarter @ Turanga.

1875 death for the above-named was reg. March quarter @ Turanga.

1876 birth for unnamed female was reg. March quarter @ Turanga.

Turanga was (I think) the old name for Gisborne, Poverty Bay. If not the old name, Turanga was certainly in the Gisborne area.

This pinpoints the location of Esther &  Henry during those years.

Not that I can see under Read/e.   But perhaps this might be the likely candidate?

I realise the birth date mentioned is different to October, but school records with birth dates are taken with a pinch of salt and need to be verified.

Oooooooooh, another record being admitted to Halswell School on the 12 Sept 1881 gives the birth date of 24 October 1868

That one is buried Cabbage Bay Cemetery, Colville.  Was a District Nurse.   Unfortunately the headstone is no help.
