Look up request for the PRIOR family from 1700 to 1800
« on: Thursday 29 November 12 15:43 GMT (UK) »
I have a Thomas PRIOR baptised 10 Jan 1784 in Medstead Hampshire who married Ann SALMON 16 Aug 1812 in Twyford Hampshire.

Thomas father was Richard PRIOR who married Lydia BAKER 12 Jan 1783 in Medstead Hampshire.

I do not have any other information for Richard and Lydia PRIOR.

Can anyone help in finding other members of their family before 1800?

Hi Muffin

Do you have the information from the marriage allegation for Thomas & Ann?

Thomas Prior aged 21, bachelor, ostler of  St Bartholomew Hyde, Winchester & Ann
Salmon aged 21, spinster, of Twyford,  to marry at Twyford 13 August 1812.  The bondsman was John Salmon, bricklayer of Twyford.

Not getting very far with other information.  Do you know when Richard & Lydia died at all?  A Richard Pryor was buried in Medstead in 1787.  No age shown.

A second son was born to this couple: Henry baptised 19 Jun 1785.

Hello Nell :)

I had the marriage information from the Hampshire Genealogical Society.
But not the Bondsman and occupations.

I only have the marriage so far. --------- Just found this birth :-\, it looks a possible one. ;)

name: Richard PRIOR  baptism/christening date: 24 Dec 1749
baptism/christening place: TADLEY, HAMPSHIRE, ENGLAND

father's name: Thomas PRIOR  mother's name: Amy

Also for Lydia BAKER.

name: Lydia BAKER
  baptism/christening date: 1738
baptism/christening place: CHALE, HAMPSHIRE, ENGLAND

father's name: Wm. BAKER  mother's name: Lydia

Can you say if they are possibles?

Could be a second marriage ???, Richard would be 34 and Lydia 45 when they married

The parish of Tadley is on the border with Berkshire, over a dozen miles away from the parish of Medstead but not impossible in terms of distance.

And Chale is on the Isle of Wight.

I found lots of records for Prior in Tadley, including a burial for a Lydia Prior, but she would appear to have been the wife of a David.

No problems with the age of Richard on marriage, but I can't see Lydia marrying for the first time at the age of 45 and then having her first child.  At that time, that would have been quite remarkable.  As far as I can tell, it was Lydia's first marriage, but you would need to look at the original record to be sure.  A Lydia Baker married in Brighstone on the Isle of Wight in 1759, which is much more likely possibility for the Lydia born in 1738 - Chale and Brighstone are not very far distant from each other, and both on the same side of the Solent!

A Richard Prior married in Tadley in 1788 - which could be the one you found - or he might have married in Kingsclere in 1781.  No way of telling from the bare bones like this  :-\

The marriage at Tadley in 1788 is for Richard Prior to Sarah Exall who are listed on the PR entry as "both of this parish"

Thank you for looking, I will have to dig a little deeper or see if the newspapers have any thing which would also help further.

Please excuse me Muffin, but as I have some Priors too, I wondered if I might intrude.   I don't think my Priors are related to yours, but there may be a connection somewhere.

I have a Thomas Prior  b  1818 in Farnham Surrey,  who married a Fanny Marsh of Alresford Hants in 1844.  They had two daughters Mary Ann  and  Louisa.    Mary Ann married Thomas Light and these two were my grt grandparents.  Mary Ann was born in 1856 at Owslebury, nr Winchester.
If anyone has any information regarding this family, I would love to know.  Such as who Thomas's parents were.

Forgive me Muffin for using your thread.

The marriage entry of 1783 for Richard Prior and Lydia Baker states that they were ‘both of this parish’ and the wedding was by banns.

The Hampshire Record Office has a bargain and sale of 1773 which mentions a Richard Pryor of Medstead, chapman, so Richard may not have been young when he married Lydia.
1773   Messuage and garden (¼a.) in Medstead.
Bargain and sale for £35, 25 Jan. 1773.
(i)    Thomas Trimmer of Alton, baker, and Mary his wife (late Steele), and Thomas their son.
(ii)    William Budd of Tenantry, Medstead, yeoman, and Richard Pryor of Medstead, chapman.
(iii)    William Dawes the elder of Alton, yeoman. (127M71/T25)

There was a Richard baptised in Medstead on 22 September 1742, son of William and Martha, and a Richard of Medstead married Elizabeth Andrews of Bentworth on 29 Feb. 1768 by licence. They appear to have had baptised in Medstead:-
1768   27 Mar      John
1769   26 Sep      John
1771   18 Jan      Mary
1772   8 Sep      James
1774   15 July      Mary
1776   29 Mar      Thomas
Elizabeth Priors/Pryors were buried on 14 Dec.1776 and 28 Dec. 1777 - so this Richard’s wife could have died. None of these names were re-used by Richard and Lydia so that could have been a second marriage?

It might be useful to remember that Medstead was a tithing of Old Alresford and that the Lord of the Manor was the Bishop of Winchester and that there was often movement between the Bishop’s manors. Also the manorial records might help follow a family backwards. I noticed that Lydia Prior was responsible for a South Town portion of Medstead church rails so she was occupying property of some size?  Yours Jane
