Steel's Butchers of Grantham
« on: Wednesday 28 November 12 15:03 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone has any information about this family of butchers, possibly established in Grantham in the 1870s.

Many thanks

Hi Poppy10

I have had a look in the 1871 & 1881 census for Grantham and could not find any Steels as butchers only Agricultural labourers in villages.I have checked with local historian but he could not recollect any butchers of that name he also checked in Directories for me but no trace.
Have you any names or dates that might?? help to locate them.

Hi,KGarrad,

Thanks for finding this family I was looking for a butcher in 1870s :-[ :-[

On 1901 census RG12/3054 Folio 10 Page 11.
William Long Steel is still a butcher living with his family at 8,Castlegate Grantham

He has moved back to 18,High Street in 1911.He certainly moves about I hope his customers followed him :P :P

That would be William Lord Steel! ;D

I did check 1871, 1861 and 1851 - but no Steel in Grantham who was a butcher.

My first thought, re 1881 census, was that the enumerator made a transcription error, and wrote Butler when the original householder's form said Butcher?!

But this occupation was also evident in 1871!

Plenty of butchers in Grantham on the 1881 census - just nobody called Steel.

On 19th January 1889 the “Commodious Residence and Business Premises” at 18, High Street, Grantham were advertised as being to let from 6th April. At the same time an advert was placed offering for sale the entire musical stock of TJ Morris, of 18 High Street, Grantham. On 1st July 1889 William Steel of 18, High Street was granted a licence to sell game.

Hi

I checked the baptisms of the Steel family on the St Wulframs Parish records in Grantham library and every one of them from 1865  to 1879 gave Butler as William Lord Steel's occupation all except the baptism of Elizabeth Ann b 1865 and it was down as Servant. It certainly was an unusual change of career???.
I have passed all the baptism dates to Poppy10.
