William GARDNER of Painswick
« on: Wednesday 28 November 12 13:58 GMT (UK) »
I wondered if anyone had access to look-up the parish registers of Painswick parish church for my 4xgt grandfather William GARDNER born possibly 1737 at Painswick, married to a Mary.  I should think they both probably died in Painswick too.

Many thanks for any help.

Thank you Victor for your look-up, but that entry isn't my William as my 3xgrt grandfather John was christened 1770 and he I think was the 4th or 5th child of William and Mary.

I think GARDNER is a fairly common surname in Gloucestershire.
Thanks for your trouble though.

Hi Poppy,
Shame you didn't disclose the 1770 christening originally. No harm done. I think I've found the marriage you're looking for at St Mary, Painswick.
October 31st, 1762, William GARDINER m. Mary TURNER.
You're right about GARDINER, and it's variants, being a common surname in Painswick. Interestingly the following marriage may also be yours.
June 7th, 1701, William GARDINER m. Mary HATTON.
The parish registers date from 1547, the reign of Edward VI. There is a local legend about the Yew trees planted in the church grounds in that there are a total of 99 trees and any further planting has been unsuccessful.

Thank you Victor for finding Mary's surname for me.  So were either of them christened at the church I wonder so that I could get their parents names?

A few years ago my husband and I stopped at Painswick on our way down south to have a look at the church, it's beautiful inside and I took photos of it and the font thinking maybe my forebears were dipped.  Also the clock outside is interesting.  I persuaded my husband to trawl through the graveyard with me for any Gardners and there were a few but I don't know if they were mine.  I'd like to get William and Mary's death dates now.

I'd read about the yew trees and the unusual types of gravestones, very interesting they are.
Thank you once again.

Hi Poppy,
I'll see if I can find a baptism for William and/or Mary, and will also see if I can find any burials for you.
