The head gear is not so strange when you start thinking that she could have been part of Gen. Booth's army of salvationists. The Salvation Army brought in straw bonnets for the women in the 1880's as part of the new uniform that was being introduced at that time.

Yet again, you've hit the nail right on the head, or in this case - right on the bonnet, OR !  :-X :-X

Sorry - that remark was rubbish !  ;D ;D

I'm sure I can remember during my lifetime seeing a bonnet worn similar to the one here - would that be possible - or have I remembered it from seeing early photographs of the Salvation Army ?

Think its salvation army

also the hair (what we can see of it) is a loose pompador style which I believe was in fashion c1910-ish, making the lady around 45.  She may be a little older if she kept the style for some years.

Thanks for your comment OR. The bonnet worried me because it reminded me of something, which I just couldn't put my finger on and seemed to be from an earlier period than when I believe the photo would have been taken. The Jane Austen thing completely passed me by but I can see the resemblance to the Sally uniform and it is certainly worth investigating.

Take a butchers at the first image of the link provided to see a similar hat style. Also the link may help for further research on this aspect of her life if the subject did indeed serve in the Sally's

A big thank you to everyone who replied. I've been browsing websites with photos of the Sallies uniforms and it certainly seems to be spot on.

Aha....OR to the rescue ;D

It was the hair that bothered me...too modern to match the bonnet style. Should have spotted the SA look as we have had the occasional one on here.

Have a look at this page...scroll down about halfway and there's a thumbnail on the right that has just the right bonnet, I think.

And anubis, Oz and the rest of the colonies were right up to the minute in ladies' fashions. Magazines with sketches of the latest styles were shipped out regularly, bought in huge numbers by the local lasses and copied by their dressmakers. In just a few days, plus shipping time, a housewife in Sydney could be as stylish as one in London.

Might take a bit longer to get to Alice, though :)
