Barham churchyard
« on: Tuesday 27 November 12 00:12 GMT (UK) »
Is there anyone who has access to Barham churchyard (or plans of it) who would be able to look up a possible burial or tomb for me? I have a copy of the will of Thomas Ladd of Barham (probate 1603) in which he states he is to be "buried in the churchyard of Barham, near unto Gate's tomb between it and the church". I am assuming that "Gate's tomb" refers to another burial there or a tomb and that Thomas was to be buried between the tomb and the church wall. Does anyone know if either tomb still exists? Alternatively does anyone know of any Ladd memorials/tombs etc in Barham?

Matt

I could make some enquiries in Barham for you, but wouldn't hold out much hope of finding a tomb from that far back. The website barham-kent.org.uk lists quite a few Ladd deaths and also, I have just discovered, monumental inscriptions.

I wonder if the family is LADE.

The KAS MIs has the following listing for Barham:

66. In The Church Yard are 3 Altar Tombs, of the Family of LADE, bearing the following Dates. 1603, 1624, 1660 but not legible.

Lade and Ladd are pretty interchangeable in old records - I have often come across both in my own research.

Looking at the series of pictures of Barham church it looks as though many of the gravestones have been cleared to the perimeter of the churchyard.  :(
