Esq. stands for Esquire - usually well-off people whose income  came from rental of property etc.

I think Elm Mount was the name of a house or estate - will check....

Elm Mount was a house close to Donnycarney village. It's shown on the 1st Edition OSI maps dated c1837, and later around 1900, but no longer exists. There's a housing estate at the location today...

see : Elm Mount, Donnycarney  (1837)

William is mentioned in Slater's directory of 1846...must be just before they moved over to Liverpool..

Pettigrew & Oulton directory of 1840 shows him at 7 Shaw St. in the city centre as an agent.

see : page 60  (left hand side of the image, about half-way up)

and he's listed in the 1834 edition at 18 Dame St. as a 'Hosier & Glover to his majesty & the Lord Lieutenant'

see : page 21  (bottom right of the image)

His occupation in the 1834 listing could tie in with the occupation listed for that William Rogerson on the 1851 census in London - i.e. 'Elastic Fabric Merchant'

Slater's is a directory which covers cities and many towns - several editions available : 1846, 1870, 1881 and 1894. Less common is the 1856 edition.

Extracts from some of these are available online and further details on Subscription websites.

Much of the 1846 edition is available on a free website at : http://www.failteromhat.com/slater.htm

The Rogerson entry is on this page in the 3rd column - http://www.failteromhat.com/slater/0293.pdf
