where is John Delme Hannam?
« on: Sunday 25 November 12 22:10 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching for a great uncle of mine a John Delme Hannam Born 27 Jan 1765 and baptised 17 Feb 1765 at St James Westminster London England. I have just discovered that he may have married and moved to New Zealand and had a child, a son called Neri, I do not know if this is a common NZ name or not. I do not know what his wife's name was or where they lived. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance     Steve

Brackenbury, Gurnell and Willson in Lincolnshire and now Nottinghamshire

Hi Steve,

Unfortunately NZ BDM's didn't start records until 1840,so it may be difficult to track your man down

Cheers Janette

Hi Steve

Can you please expand on where you discovered this information ... and what the connection to New Zealand might be ?

Hi Steve,

Formal immigration to New Zealand didn't begin until 1840 with the New Zealand Company (and others). Prior to this early European visitors or residents tended to be either explorers, missionaries or whalers.

Might John Delme HANNAM have fitted into one one these groups? He would have been aged 35 in 1800 and most likely deceased by 1840.

Do you have any information about his year of death? Can you deduce it (even approximately) from what you know already?

Hi Steve, there was a John Hannam (no middle name given) who was sentenced to seven years transportation in 1801, aged 39 (See the Old Bailey website). According to convict lists on another site this John Hannam was 31 and was 'pardoned to quit the kingdom', which I presume means he had to leave England for good. Where he ended up is anyone's guess although given the year it is likely to be America.
Regards,
Craig.

Hi Steve,

The sparse information you have might make more sense if we consider Australia rather than New Zealand. Australia was the most common (only?) destination country for 'transported' persons.

And the implied date range you gave would also suit his arrival in Australia as European settlement began in the 1700's.
