1841 Derbyshire Census lookup request
« on: Tuesday 31 May 05 16:45 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for Aaron Simpson and/or Rosanna Simpson.  I know that Rosanna was alive in 1841, but I'm not so sure about Aaron.  They were married in Duffield parish in 1826.  Rosanna died in Burton upon Trent district in 1847.  Aaron would have been about 36, Rosanna about 33 in 1841.

I've asked about Aaron before, and I apologize for asking again, but I think I was looking in the wrong place last time.

Thank you!

Hello there,

Have you a death certificate for Rosanna, with last address, this may narrow down the search area, as there is no name index for the 1841 index.  Did they have children?  If so where were they born?

Just out of curiosity, how do you guys search the 1841 and 1851 censuses?  AncestryPlus just got the 1861, and I've been going to town on that, and supposedly they're going to have the 1841 and 1851 by sometime later this year.  I'd search the whole county if I knew how to access the census.

I don't have the death certificate.  I learned that she died in Burton upon Trent district from FreeBMD (actually the Ancestry.com England and Wales Civil Registration Index: 1837-1983).  I only know of one child they had, my great great grandfather John Simpson who was christened on 22 Oct 1826 in Heage.  I have a marriage date for them 26 Mar 1826 from Duffield parish.  Hmm.. you know, that's not quite 9 months.  I never noticed that before.  I hope I have my facts right.

Hello,

The 1851 Census for Derbyshire has not yet been released on CD Rom, but there is a name index available, the 1841 is available as scanned images of the original census pages, indexed by place only - so it's a case of searching through the pages for your area until you come across your particular entry.  I am sure that both will become available online before too long - which will be a godsend for us genealogists because of the nationwide searchable database.

I'll have a look in Heage, as this seems a good starting point.

Oh, goodness.  I knew that the 1841 wasn't ordered, but I didn't know you had to search through scanned images and bad handwriting.  I really appreciate you doing that, but I've looked through whole counties in Ohio and Kentucky for people and I can't ask you to look through any more than just Heage.  It's enough to put you off of genealogy for years!

Yes, it will be great when AncestryPlus gets the 1851 and 1841 online.  I access it through my public library, and it's been extremely useful.
