Does anyone know anything about Amateur Photographer magazine circa 1900?  My family has a monthly medal presented to an ancestor by AP about that time, but no record of what the medal was for - best photo?  I know there is a magazine with that name now, but I have had no response to my questions.

All I can tell you is that the magazine was founded in 1884 and is the World's oldest photography magazine.

On that basis, I'd say that it stands a good chance that it was for either a photo, or possibly Letter of the Month. Personally, I'd keep badgering them till they answer!!

This basically gives the same info as Tony has provided but may be worth a look.

Many thanks both of you.  I will certainly keep badgering them now that I know they are one and the same.

I know that they issued a yearly bound volume of AP, as I have one for 1910. You may find one for the year you are after

Better and better.  I hope their archives are complete.  1899 is the year, but although the medal is described as 'Monthly' there is no other date on it.
