akld orphanage records

Hi, i'm trying to find out which orphanage a family member was put into in 1883 as a baby in AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND
His name is PERCY EDWARD SCARROTT ... we are told he was placed on the church steps and grew up in an orphanage ...
I have some orphanage names but have no idea how to obtain any records

can someone advise me please?

There are some orphanage records in the Auckland Catholic Diocesan Archives.

You might consider the Industrial Schools Nominal Index.

Industrial Schools and Orphanages seemed to work hand in hand (although I'm no expert).

It's not a simple look-up if all you have is a name (no year or school) so be prepared to spend several hours looking through the indexes and possibly coming away none the wiser.

I don't see a birth,marriage or death for a PERCY EDWARD SCARROTT  in NZ BDM's
there is a marriage for
1918/5932 Edna Myrtle Gwendolen  McMillan to Francis Edward  Scarrott

Maybe this death? It gives a birth year of 1883

BDM NZ Deaths - 1965/27076 - SCARROTT, Edward - 82Y - d.o.d 11 Apr 1965

...and a possible corresponding entry on the NZSG Burial Locator CD mentions the name Percy

Doesn't help with the orphanage query though.

If this is the right person would it be safe to assume he wasn't adopted out as his surname hasn't changed. In which case he may well be "findable" on one of the Industrial School nominal indexes.

Although not shown on the NZ BDM on-line index, the birth registration does appear on the fiche:

Edward SCARROTT, 1883, March quarter @ Auckland.

Do you have the newspaper death notice details for this man?
