« on: Friday 23 November 12 16:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help?  I am try to locate the service records of a Herbert Clarke who was a Bombardier and Sargeant in the Royal Artillery.  Here's the information that I have.
1881 census he is with his family in Egg Buckland nr Plymouth Devon and is a Bombardier in the RA
1901 census he is a Sergeant in the RA in Carmarthen Wales his youngest child was born in 1895 in Trimulghery Madras India and this is were his first wife died in 1895.
He was born in 1867 in Beccles, Suffolk.
Any helping in locating any military records would be much appreciated - I have had great trouble with the new layout of the National Archives website were I thought I might find the information.

Many Thanks
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,
from the National Archives, London, page on Ancestry
I think this must be his service record. The pages are from the Army Reserve [Special Reservists].
There are a few pages. His number was 4519. Regiment: Royal Garrison Artillery. He was a widower. There was also a letter to a Mrs E/H Clarke of 23 Ferndown Road, Eltham, S.E.9. She  requested his discharge certificate. Her name on another page was Barbara Ethel Clarke and her husband was a voluntary patient in a mental ? in Epsom. From the draft reply he was a/sgt no. 4519; served with the colours from 1914 to 1916
and as no. 50305 RGA from 1885 to 1903.
Worthwhile finding them as they are not too badly damaged.
I have had a look on NA website and so far just found his medal card. I haven't used their new website before so can't offer any advice.
Rae
