Hi ,
I'm searching for a marriage for Thomas Thomas (abt 1805) and Ann MacCarty (abt 1815)...  according to the 1851 census their daughter Ann Thomas abt.1835 was born in Bristol...as was her mother Ann.

census:- HO107: Piece 1936: Folio 425: page 11...the family are living in Uphill.

I cannot find a trace of the family on 1841 census, Thomas Thomas was a mariner so it's possible he was at sea, but I've been unable to trace wife Ann and daughter Ann.

I hope I have given enough information :)

Tyvm Reeveh :)

1851 census says:

Thomas, Thomas  Head  M  46  Mariner (Captain)  b Swansea
Thomas, Ann  Wife  F  36  b Swansea
Thomas, Ann  Daughter  F  16  b Bristol
Thomas, Alfred  Son  M  6  Scholar  b Bristol
Thomas, Emma  Daughter  F  8  Scholar  b Bristol
Thomas, Mary  Daughter  F  4  Scholar  b Bristol
Thomas, Margaret  Daughter  F  2  b Bristol
Thomas, Edward  Son  M  1  b Uphill

So marriage possible anywhere on the Bristol Channel coast?! ;D

Hi,

Thanks for replying...you do indeed have the right family...apart from a copy of birth certificate for  Edward Thomas b. 1850 I have little information...he was born in Uphill, but I started on this board as all other info gleaned from census records show Bristol as places of birth for 4 of the Thomas children :)

Bristol is the only clue I have, on every census records I've found the place of birth is simply Bristol (except for Edward who was born in Uphill).

The 1861 census shows this family living in Swansea:-
RG9; Piece 4104; folio 55; page 11
Ann Thomas (not sure if she's a widow now..enumerator's entry is a bit vague)
Alfred Thomas
Edward Thomas
Margaret Thomas

If there's anything you think I may need to add please ask

Ty :)

The problems with the 1841 census are:

1) No place of birth is given! Just Y or N to "born in county".
2) Adult ages are (usually) rounded down to a multiple of 5 years.

I have had a look at Bristol, but can't see Thomas and Ann?
I even searched for young Ann, as her age and place of birth would be easier to match! No joy?

Hi,
Thank you so very much for your help....I can't tell you how thrilled I am :D

Do you have any idea on how I can find out Ann's former name please?

I was actually expecting Thomas Thomas to be the widower...there are 2 marriages for Thomas Thomas ( mariner) to a Catherine in Swansea, she died 1839......but that was obviously the wrong track.

thank you once again for your invaluable help

Reeveh :D

Have you got a birth certificate of one of the children? I would hope that her previous name might be included on the certificate..........there are a lot of Maccarty buried in Swansea..........but you do need her first (maiden) name first really

Anne

ps I see you have the youngest child's cert........no clue on that?

Nothing on the copy of Edward's birth certificate.....

5th Jan 1850 Edward, son of Thomas Thomas (seaman)...mother Ann Thomas (formerly MacCarty)....no other info regarding former names I'm afraid...place of birth Uphill.

I just had a quick look on igi  St Mary's Redcliffe for a baptism of their daughter Ann, but no luck.

I may have to think about sending for copies of birth certs of the other children, but Freebmd throws out multiple registrations for them all, that's why i opted for Edward's, he was the easiest to pinpoint.

I'll  also have a look at Swansea marriages for Macarty....you never know :)

Hi Reeveh,
You may have already found the answer to this as I've only just seen your request but I have the parish registers for Bristol that I downloaded from BAFHA via Genfair and there is only one McCarty marriage (although there are several McCarthy). Owen McCarty married Ann Webb on 31st March 1828 at Bedminster and this marriage would fit in with the timescale of the second marriage in 1833.
Hope this helps,
Gill
