Suggestions Please!
« on: Tuesday 20 November 12 20:25 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping that one of you learned RootsChatters can help me out.

I have tried, in vain, to find the birth entries for both my gtx3 grandfather, and his older sister.

I am looking for the births of both William Coventry,c 1851/52, and his sister Anne/Agnes Coventry, c 1849/50.

Using census entries, I have the family living in Gorbals, 1851, and Port Glasgow, 1861.

I have used these areas, initially, in finding birth entries. The parents of William and Anne are William and Maria (nee White) Coventry. Although married in Glasgow, William and Maria were born in Ireland.

Any ideas as to where else to look, besides ScotlandsPeople, would be appreciated.

Also, can anyone confirm, did all births have to be registered at this time..

Many thanks.

Gail
do you have the births of
William and Maria's other children from family search,
and not all births had to be registered until 1855
which is the first year of registration in Scotland

For Scotland, this is pre civil registration, which began in 1855, later than in England and Wales.  If the children were born in Scotland (you don't say, but the census entries should indicate an area/parish), then there may be a baptismal record in the OPR if they were baptised in the Church of Scotland.   Roman Catholic baptisms are also included on ScotlandsPeople, but not other denominations.

Thank you both, Elaine and Nell.

I do indeed have birth entries for William and Maria's other chidren, born after 1855.

I have tried looking for pre 1855 birth/baptisms, using both Coventry and White as surnames, but have drawn a blank!

Thanks again for your help.

So are there any clues from the census entry in 1861 - it will at lease tell you where they were born.

This is the closest RC baptism I can see on SP with a possible transcription error for Maria

born 10/03/1850 bapt. 20/03/1850 COVENTRY AGNES - WILLIAM COVENTRY and MARY (MARIA) SMITH at GLASGOW, ST MARY'S

Thanks Sancti.

That's them on the 1851 census, at Wellington Street.

I had looked at the birth for Agnes, born 1850. But Maria is given as "Smith", not White.

And I don't have the family as being RC either. Another strange one!!

Cheers :)

Looks like the family were RC, so the Smith might be a transcription error for Agnes' baptism

born 01/04/1859 bapt. 01/02/1861 COVOUNTRY JAMES son of WILLIAM COVOUNTRY & MARY (MARIA) WHITE at PORT GLASGOW, ST JOHN'S
