What parishes in birmingham in 1824?
« on: Tuesday 31 May 05 11:56 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I've run into a brickwall and don't know where to go from here.

My earliest ancestor is THOMAS GEORGE SYLVEN born Abt 1824 Birmingham.

The first Sylven entry in the BMD is his marriage in 1853 in surrey from this I have found his father is JAMES and is a victualer.

All the Census entries (1861, 1871, 1881) state his birthplace as birmingham.

My next thought is to find his birth in a church register but I have no idea which parishes would have been considered as part of Birmingham in 1824.

Does anyone know of a publication or web site which may contain a list of birmingham parishes?

Unfortunately living in Australia makes it a bit difficult to visit Birmingham and check out the local history centre

Dear Howard,
I found my way around Birmingham from google & yahoo. I like you am from Oz and it is very confusing.
this might also help,

http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/Web/corporate/pages.nsf/Links/8DFFB66821BBDEBD80256A9A004DC89A

It is from the links and maybe easier to access than keying in, I also tried all the links at the beginning of the lookup requests page, they helped me get a bit of an idea.

Saw you were listing from Australia. I am from Queensland and see you have an interest in the Cooper line. That is the main name that I am interested in. Mine are from the Birmingham area. Where are your from.

The answer to your question of what were the Birmingham parishes in 1824 is as follows (actually 1834 but close enough):

All Saints
St George
St Martin
St Mary
St Paul
St Peter (may have been later)
St Phillip
St Thomas.
