James Hutchison born 1851 Newcastle
« on: Monday 19 November 12 12:36 GMT (UK) »
James born around 1851 a basketmaker met MaryAnn Stewart a basketmaker when he moved to Peterhead around 1889.  They had several children, then he disappeared around 1899.  No-one can find James's birth certificate, but he was said to have been from Newcastle, left there when he was older, lived in Edinburgh for some years, then moved in with MaryAnn when he was about 38 or so.  He is on a couple of censuses in Aberdeenshire and Forfarshire.  I found a James Hutchison in the Aberdeen Poorhouse in 1899, but not sure if he is the correct one as nobody had been able to track him before he met Maryann or after he either died or just disappeared.  His parents on the death Certificate were James Hutchison Labourer and Ann Hutchison ms Grant.  The death certificate says age 61, but the list register says 51.  Any ideas?ps He was said to  a have been a coal miner previously to being a basketmaker.

Did he ever marry Mary Ann?

He is on a couple of censuses in Aberdeenshire and Forfarshire

What birthyear(s) are shown on those entries

This is the only entry I can find on the IGI where mother is Ann Grant but birthyear is way out and birth was Scotland so unlikely to be him

There is also this 1861 entry for Morpeth but again - birthyear is out.  I can't find the family in 1851 at the moment but there is no marriage in England between a Grant & Hutchison.

Given the gap in the childrens ages - this could be a second marriage

James Hutchison 48 ag labourer b Wooler
Mary Ann 40 b Eglingham
Margaret 16 b Whittingham
Jane  14 b Stilbottle
David  2   ditto
James 4 b Warkworth
Elizabeth 1 b Alnham??

Hi Carole, Well on the 1891 census Maryann(No official marriage) was 17 years younger than James, and that was when he was saying that he was 40.  Is it feasible that he could have been that James was around 62 when they met?  It's possible as the James in the poorhouse was certified as 61 when he was supposed to be only 51.  This is probably the same James as the poorhouse James but is it MaryAnn's James from Newcastle?  I think that most people can tell a 40 year old man from a 66 year old man.
I was looking at the Newcastle birth and that appeared to be about correct especially with the family having a weaver as it is a bit like basket making, sort of.  I think that we need some later data on James movements from Newcastle to Edinburgh where he lived for some time before heading for Peterhead.

I know, but on another census he said Forfar, so we think that was not the truth.  We have tracked down a James from Edinburgh and the trouble was that the man had gotten married around the same time as his census with MaryAnn, and you would have to stretch your imagination a bit to get that to fit.

That would have made him around 55 when they first met when she was 23.  Right, but was he born in Aberdeen and not Newcastle?  I think it's the same man, just want to know his real birthplace.  He changed his story a few times.
