Daisy Hello from central victoria, I am a decendant of George Rutt and Ann cook stanmore (my GGG Grandparents)......who came to south Australia on the Hoogley in 1839 and they both died in 1840 along with two of their children. My family comes down from Grace Rutts (who was a dairy maid in England) Brother Mark Rutt who married Elizabeth Boon. Some of the information you have been given here is not quite correct because other Rutts also came to South australia, however it is a good start. I have done Huge amounts of research of my family and their arms of the tree and as My mother is still alive it is always very exciting to share with her. you may like to see my public family tree on Ancestry and I am happy always to share with whomever needs it. chat anytime!

Me again!! :) I also have a photo of Master Edward Isac dowsetts. the Journal of the government schooner 'Yatala' 6 May 1852 - 31 May 1852 by the master Edward Dowsett. Grace would not have been destitute as they were well off.....and she remarried.

Hi Lee-Ann,

Thank you so much for your reply. I would be very interested in having a photo of Capt. Dowsett. I am wondering if you would be able to email me a copy or tell me how to obtain one. I did actually find a photo of the Dowsett family at the State Library. I have just read below that you are a descendant of the Captain and Grace as well. They would be my ggg grandparents. I come from their son William Spencer Dowsett. I would be happy to email you the Dowsett photo if you would like it. William Spencer would be my gg grandfather and his son, Spencer Dowsett was my g grandfather. His daughter Lorna Dowsett was my grandma. She told my some about the Dowsetts, but left out certain parts! I don't know if that was on purpose or not. She was born in 1904. My dad shares the same name as my gg grandfather, William Spencer.  Ann Stanmore Cook and George Rutt were my gggg grandparents. My email is (*)
I am not that good at navigating around rootschat and only found your post because I got a notification email today.

How would I locate your photos? Are you on ancestry.com

I have never seen a photo of Edward. I did find a photo of Grace outside her Alberton home in Queen Street. It was on ancestry.com It would have been taken in 1880's. I would love to know more about the family. Any information you can share would be much appreciated. I did ask my grandma as much as possible when she was alive. I know the Rutts came out on the Hooghly in 1839. Also that Mary Ann was Graces's daughter and brought up as the Captain's which shows how decent he was. Grandma didn't mention this, I don't know if she even knew. I also only recently found out that half of the family died soon after arrival.

Thanks again for your reply,

Lyn

Hi, my name is Rick Dowsett and am the GGGG (I think) of Cpt Edward Dowsett. Our families continue to live in Adelaide South Australia.
I produced a facsimile of Cpt Dowsett's diary dated May 6th 1852 to May 31st 1852 which my father, Lewis Oswald Dowsett gave to the Mortlock Library in Adelaide and his Captains desk to the Maritime Museum in Pt Adelaide many years ago. My Grandfather is Oswald Dowsett who is shown in a link to an earlier photo in this blog.
I previously have not looked too far into our family history due to limited time but have considered it many times. I will assist where I can.

Hi all,
I too am related to William Spencer dowsett via my Grandmother who was Doreen Dowsett. She was the daughter of William Herbert Spencer. Although Nana would never speak of her family- who knows what family secrets where there, as William contested his wife's will and they didn't live together. Some family mysteries for sure.
I would love to see photo's of William Spencer. I think i have one of William Herbert but Nana never wrote on the back of photographs.
I can be contacted also via email:
