Look up - Nottinghamshire Archives
« on: Sunday 18 November 12 16:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am searching for a William Gregory who was born, according to all the censusses, in 1809. One census gives his birthplace as Arnold, Nottm, the others have it as Nottinghamshire.

I was hoping that someone, when next visiting the archives,  would have the time to check the archives for all information on the following birth/marriages?

William Gregory bap 19 August 1804, Arnold, Nottm.

William Gregory bap 1809, Mansfield, Nottm.

Marriage of William Gregory/Hannah Sharman, 2 April 1809, Arnold, Nottm.

Marriage of John Gregory/Alice Goldby, 6 November 1809, Arnold, Nottm.

I have to say that I have spent a lot of time, along with the kind help of others on this site, trying to trace 'my man' all to no avail.

He may well have been born in Arnold in 1809 but we are unable to find any record of the birth. I am hoping that the listings in the archives may well give a 'snippet' that will allow the line to continue.

Thank you,

Mark.

Sorry , not visiting the archives anytime soon but I can tell you what is on the NFHS CDs.

William Gregory bap Arnold 19/8/1804, son of James and Mary.

There is no William Gregory bap at Mansfield anywhere near that time, in fact no Gregorys of any description.
I did find a William baptised at Sutton in Ashfield Independent Congregational on 29/7/1809  to Jonathan and Mary.  The marriages of that establishment are not on the CD and I don't know if they are held at the archives.  I can't find their marriage anywhere else on the CD.

Another William was bap at Basford 6/3/1804 to Sam and Milicent which I don't expect to be yours but am giving you the information.

A 4th William in the right time frame was bap at Blidworth 9/9/1810 to Thomas and Ann, but he died in 1812.

I'm sure someone will come along who can check the marriages for you as there may be some witness names in the registers which are useful.

NC.

Thanks NC,

I am aware of the 1804 baptism. The IGI has a listing for the 1809 baptism in Mansfield, giving his parent as Phoebe Gregory.

Arnold to Mansfield is one road of about 10 miles so I was wondering if he could have been born somewhere near the middle, registered in Mansfield but grew up nearer Arnold.

This is all pie in the sky, of course, until I can get some 'concrete' info from the archives.

Many thanks for your info.

Mark.

Hi. I'm fairly new to Rootschat but hoping someone can help me. I have an ancestor, Amy Stirland (nee Goddard) who died in Greasley, Nottinghamshire in November 1851. I have her burial details (30 November 1851 from the Notts CD) but not her date of death. Is there anyway of finding this out without having to order the death certificate?

Thanks
Mark

Hi,
If its any help parts of what I would call Mansfield are technically Sutton in Ashfield, so that baptism would be a real possibility. But obviously you are still after hard evidence.

Hi Mark,
Have you looked at the Parish Reg for Williams Marriage to Harriet Wilson?
Witnesses may give a clue.

William/Harriot-Harriett Gregory Baptised in Arnold;
WILLIAM 11 Sept 1831
SAMUEL 28 March 1833
JOHN 24 April 1835
SAMUEL 13 Nov 1843
Fathers Occp, FWK
(Source FreeREG)

Both of the Samuel prob died.
Sorry if you already had this

Trish :)

Thanks Trish,

I have hit the proverbial brick wall re William Gregory. I have found his wife's ancestors but nothing re William.

There is a William bap Arnold 19 Aug 1804 to a James/Mary Gregory which appears to be the only bap in Arnold but he is very consistent re his age in subsequent census.

1851 he is 42,  1861 he is 52 and 1871 he is 62 which kind of points to a birth year of 1809.

Any help gratefully received  ::)

Mark.

Trish,

I cannot find anything re William's death, which would help re his age etc.

Harriet appears to have been buried 4 July 1871 at Arnold, aged 63.

I go back to a previous post above whereby there appears to be a William born 1809 in Mansfield. There is one road between Arnold and Mansfield and if he was reared around the middle of it he could class himself as being from Arnold as opposed to a Mansfied........ 8)

So it could be Arnold 1804 or Mansfield 1809......!!!
