Hughes, Henefail, Llaneugrad

I have just learnt that my great-grandfather, who was gold miner in the present day Ghana at the beginning of the last century, was born in a place called Llaneugrad.

His name was Hugh Hughes and he died of a tropical disease that he'd contracted when over in Africa. He died in Betws y Coed. The 1881 and 1891 censuses show that his father was a William Hughes who was a groom and coachman living at Henefail in Llaneugrad. I notice that there is a big house of some sort called Parciau near there on the census.........would I be right in assuming that he worked there, I wonder? And whose house was that place? Where exactly is Henefail in Llaneugrad? I can't find it on maps!

I know that William Hughes was coal carter in Bethesda in 1911..........and that's the last I hear of him.

Would anyone have any information on some of the questions asked?

A Mrs Williams , Parciau, Llanuegrad had instructed a solicitor that  she wanted a royalty if stones from Tyddyn Phillip Quarry were used for a highway.

Mrs Williams (as above) had contributed £1 to a Testimonial to John Hughes, Frondeg, Amlwch.

Unfortunately no first name, but she may still be there in other census years.
I suppose if you have William Hughes in 1891 and 1881, you can look at other census pages till you find Parciau.

     My Great Great Grandfather had Parciau Home Farm in the 1800's, he had 7 servants but none were named Hughes. Parciau Great House was occupied by the Rev. William Williams, (son of Sir John Williams, Baronet, of Bodelwyddan), his wife, three children and 7 servants. (I have no names for them). Parciau was only one of the large estate houses in the area and even modest houses and farms had their fair share of maids, indoor and outdoor servants etc. Provision merchants etc employed grooms and coachmen to fetch and carry, so you have a whole range of possible employers to choose from. Henefail is a row of four stone cottages in Marianglas. They are on the back road going from Marianglas to Llanallgo.

Hi , my great taid , William Parry worked at Parciau as a cowman - prob at the same time as your relative. The house was quite grand but was pulled down in the 60s I think altho relatives of the original owners still farm there I believe. I have images of the house. Henefail is 5 mins away and my Nain lived there from being tiny til she left home to work in service. I have photos of this also - it is a row of 4 cottages - down a tiny lane off Marianglas main green. Its now owned by a Mr Parry whose family lived in one of the cottages since 1905.
