Hi Johnjensen

Yes the address is the key point.

A John Nixon (farmer) was the husband of Mary Anne. They married in Killucan in 1839.

I suspect the John Nixon Grocer at 80 U Dorset St is a relative but may not be the husband. The grocer acquired a alcoholic license in 1874. Which kind of matches the end of Griffiths references to John/Mary Anne Nixon c1872 (if memory serves me correctly) renting at Rathwire near Killucan.  However in 1886 a marriage reference here in NSW describes Henry Nixon (My GG) son of the LATE John Nixon of Co Westmeath. So I have worked on the assumption that John the father was deceased before 1886.

Its all a bit tricky but I do suspect the grocer is a relative somehow.

Cheers

Robert

I see that Jno. Nixon at #80 in the 1885 listing. He's gone by 1891 .... dont have anything in between at the moment :

1891 - Dorset Street, Upper
  78 Tenements
  79 Mrs. O'Moore, Mrs bootmaker
80 Bernard McDonald, grocer & wine merchant
[Eccles Lane]

same listing in 1894.

Working back in time, John Nixon is at #80 in 1879. Skipping back to 1872 shows a Joseph Nixon, a 'grocer &c' at that address - maybe his father ?

In 1868 the address is listed as 'John Scarlett, grocer &c'

Hi shanew147

Thank you for the additional info.
I gather you mean Nixon not Dixon for the directory listings ?

Cheers

I did use the wrong surname for follow-up parish searches -

possible record of several childen born to John Nixon and his wife Mary Corcoran at 80 Upr. Dorset St. between 1873 and 1879.

  Nixon / Corcoran baptisms

  all St. Michan's RC

I think this John and Mary may possibly appear as witnesses on a marriage in 1865.

see : Peter Orr/ Margaret McCann marriage, St. Mary's RC

Residence for both them are given as 'Howth'

Thats interesting.

So the John Nixon grocer is not my John Nixon (Farmer) who is married to Mary Anne in 1839.

The death of Mary Ann Nixon at 78 U dorset St in 1896 is a near coincidence in space given the Nixon grocer reference for 80 U dorset St a few years prior ?

Cheers

It's looking like a coincidence to me - I think this John was single and in Dublin in 1865, and married to Mary Corcoran some time after that but before 1873.

I thought a marriage might show up on IrishGenealogy to help confirm or rule this out - but nothing showed up. If they lived and maybe married in Howth, then it would be just outside the area covered.

Unusual, given the relatively uncommon name, so close in space & time!

sorry diverting your topic... but will post one more detail on that Nixon/Corcoran couple in case it turns out to be useful to someone else...  their likely marriage in Dublin North district in 1866 :

  Name: John Nixon
  Registration district:   Dublin North
  Event type: Marriage
  Year :1866
  Volume : 2 / Page: 738

a matching entry appears for a Maria Corcoran.
