Nixon, Mary Anne - location of grave in Dublin
« on: Wednesday 07 November 12 07:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have recently traced a (potential) ancestor to Dublin on 2nd January 1896 with a death certificate copy but I am unsure as to how to find their grave (if indeed they have one) in Dublin.

Her name was Mary Anne Nixon and she died on 2nd January 1896 at 78 Upper Dorset St Dublin North.

Aged 73 yrs approx at date of death, Mary was the widow of a farmer named John Nixon (He appears to have predeceased her - perhaps in 1872).

If there is any mention of Co Westmeath on her grave (assuming she has one) there is an excellent chance that this Mary was the mother of my GG Henry Nixon - who was born at Rosmead Co Westmeath in November 1850.

I know she was alive in 1889 as I have a court records from NSW mentioning her.

As I live in Sydney Australia I am not quite 'round the corner' ! .... so I would greatly appreciate any suggestions/assistance people can give !

Cheers

Robert

The best place to start is with a search of Glasnevin online. It's a pay-website, for one of the larger cemeteries serving Dublin.

see : Dublin Graveyards  (RootsChat resources topic)

Other larger cemeteries in Dublin at the time were Deansgrange & Mount Jerome.

What denomination were your Nixons ?

Another option would be to check to see if there was a death notice in a newspaper. These sometime mentioned the church and cemetery.

Hi shanew147

Thanks for the tips.

I tried a death notice search of the Irish Times - as there is an Index reference that comes up on FindMyPast but when I checked the IT site no trace for a Nixon at that particular time - curious !

She was Church of Ireland denomination.

Cheers

She was Church of Ireland denomination.
....

Then push Mount Jerome up the list - they have a website but you cant search online yet. They will do a search for a fee.

It's worth checking online for MI's and photos - there was a collection of these for Mount Jerome on IGP web, although the link isn't working for me at the moment.

The IGP website doesn't have all the Mount Jerome inscriptions. You would have to arrange a search with Mount Jerome to be certain. Even if there isn't a headstone then they should have some sort of burial record.

If the burial is not in Mount Jerome then it's just a case of trying each of the others - next biggest after Glasnevin is Dean's Grange. Opposite side of the city, but possible.

If there was a Co. Westmeath connection then it's always possible that the burial took place there..

MI's = Memorial Inscriptions, e.g. on headstones

the Irish newspaper Archive has the "Westmeath Examiner" online.
Pay-site, I think, but maybe it's on FindMyPast?
