Isaac Wilcockson of Preston
« on: Friday 16 November 12 08:11 GMT (UK) »
I have researched Isaac born 1783.
The only thing I am missing is where was Isaac and his wife Amelia in the 1841 census.
Can anyone find them for me?
I have found the street in Preston where their house was in 1841 and they do not appear to be there.
I have also checked Amelia's family (Senols) as far as I am aware - they lived in London.
They had no children.
Isaac ran the Preston Chronicle newspaper.
In 1851 and 1861 they are at home in Ribblesdale Place, Preston.

thanks
Little Wren

I'm stumped in 1841 at the moment.  All I could find is a listing in the 1828 Pigot's National Directory (Preston), which lists Isaac under 'Booksellers, Stationers and Printers' as residing/working at Market Place, Preston.

Just a point of reference for anyone else looking! :)

Hi there

I havent been able to find it either.  Changed the surname spelling and everything.
Wonder if they were abroad as they certainly had enough money.
Found Isaacs Probate information of under £20.000 which was a
good sum in 1865.  Died 20th December 1864. Wife Amelia the widow.

Thank you to Emsworthy and Sandymc for looking .
I didn't have the 1835 information, many thanks for that.
They might have been abroad, Isaac had a cousin in Preston who liked travelling, he was in Preston in 1841.

Regards

Thanks Radcliff
I have a bit of background info for Isaac. He's not mentioned very much in histories of Preston but he must have been involved in the civic society of the time. He ran the Chronicle newspaper so must have known what was going on all the time. He was born a Quaker but was disowned probably because he married outside the faith. He was involved with railways around Preston, the gas company in Preston, he owned a small cotton mill?, he was involved in other societies in Preston. There is a letter I have seen in Manchester Archives where he has been asked advice about education but he has declined because he has retired from public life. I have been to the site of his house in Ribblesdale Place - a wonderful position with views over the river and beyond. He published a book about the Preston Guild in 1822. I also have his photo in a family history book. I have birth, marriage, death and probate info. The only thing missing is where he was in 1841 and has been suggested he may have been abroad, or he may just have been missed.
regards
Little Wren

on 5th June 1841 (the day before the census) and in August 1841 the Preston Chronicle still says 'printed by Isaac Wilcockson of 12 Ribblesdale Place.' I have been inside one of the houses on Ribblesdale Place and can testify that the view today is still good and was probably even better in the 1800's. They are also bigger than they look from the outside
