I'm afraid I'm resurrecting a very old thread here, but I have some information to add.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate of Richard Mahoney and Sarah Taylor (happy to supply if anyone wants to email me jennygradwell at outlook dot com)

Sarah Mahoney (née Taylor) was my Great Great Grandmother. Her son Thomas was my Great Grandfather, and his son Thomas my Grandad.

On Sarah's 1874 marriage certificate, her Father is listed as "William Taylor, deceased. 'Furnaceman.'" (I think).

From what I can tell (similar to other theories here)...........

Elizabeth Taylor (née ??) (b.1831, Presteigne) married William Taylor and they had 3 children:
  • Sarah Taylor (b.1853, Sirhowy)
  • Thomas Taylor (b.1856, Sirhowy)
  • Ellen Taylor (b.1861, Sirhowy).

Then William Taylor presumably died at some point between 1861 and 1866 ish, because Elizabeth then (I assume!) married John Sheen (b.1833, Cork) and they had two children together:
  • Elizabeth (b.1867, Sirhowy)
  • Thomas (b.1869, Sirhowy)

So John Sheen was Sarah Taylor's stepfather, and Elizabeth and Thomas were her half-siblings.

I am still trying to find records of:
  • William Taylor and Elizabeth's marriage (assume 1850-1853 ish?)
  • William Taylor's death (assume 1861-1866 ish?).
  • Elizabeth's marriage to John Sheen. (assume 1866 ish?).
  • Any pre-1871 census info about William Taylor and Elizabeth (Maidenname)

It  looks to me that William and Elizabeth are on the 1851 census named as Tailor(which is as per the original),living in Sirhowy.William is given as born 1822,Herefordshire,Elizabeth 1830 Radnorshire.
The marriage is William Taylor(father Henry, labourer) to Elizabeth Weale(father Thomas, labourer) at Sirhowy in Dec 1850.

Regards
Roger

Hi Roger,

Thanks for this. I discovered the Weale connection earlier today too! But I didn't think to look for Tailor.

I found the marriage via familysearch.org uk (Wales, Monmouthshire, Parish Registers, 1538-1912) which was on 10 December 1850.

Now to renew searches for 'Tailor' !

Thanks again,

Jenny.

Hi Jenny will send you a email I too found them on family search but also found a really big thread about the Taylor side on a search I done. Very interesting as its put a new thing on Richard and Sarah my Gg parents. Mary there daughter was my great grandmother. I now know why as well why my dad said they from  Merthyr Tydfil as found her there in 1881 census as Mary sheen.
