Mankelow
« on: Thursday 15 November 12 11:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am starting out (at last) trying to find the root of my relatively unusual surname. I know that my paternal grandfather came from Tunbridge Wells and that I had a great aunt Ruth living there. I am not sure when she died. Any ideas will be gratefully received

Thanks

Hi Johnny and welcome to Rootschat.

Mankelow (and variants) is a surname I have come across many times in my researches in Kent.

When researching it is important to collect together any information available in the family such as certificates, funeral cards and to note down any family stories.  Some of the latter may be completely wrong but many have a grain of truth in them.

Then you need to work back methodically generation by generation from a known event eg information on a birth, marriage or death certificate.  This helps to avoud following the wrong family.

There are a number of sites with free information which we can tell you about.

If you tell us the name of your paternal grandfather and some rough dates plus any other information you have eg who he married  we can help you get started.
