Batemans of Ramsey

I can trace satisfactorily to James Bateman, b abt 1762, m 04 Aug 1786, d 07 Sep 1829.
I have seen and copied the relevant Bateman entries in the Ramsey Parish Register in Huntingdon.
There is no entry for James Bateman's baptism about this date and hence no father's name.
My Mother said in about 1960 that there was a brother Phineas. Various Phineas Batemans appear in the record from 1688 but I cannot devise a credible lineage to get me earlier that James.
Does anyone know more please?

Without a baptism it's difficult. Are there are wills from about that time that name James, or his children as beneficiaries?

A  Phineas Bateman who could be James' brother is the innkeeper  living in Fleet, Lincolnshire in 1841.  He is aged 80, and not born in Lincolnshire.  
This is likely to be the same Phineas Bateman who married Elizabeth Rignol at Long Sutton, Lincolnshire in 1798. 

This marriage appears on the familysearch site, and also on FreeReg - but unfortunately these don't show details such as witnesses, or whether the groom was from another parish - so it might be helpful to see the original register entry.

Phineas died in 1842 aged 83 and was buried at Long Sutton.   If age at death is accurate, he would be older than James, and it is therefore possible that he was named after his grandfather (although of course you can't rely wholly on traditional naming patterns).  

It may be relevant that James named his first son Henry.  There are not many Bateman burials in Ramsey during the second half of the 18th C, but Elizabeth Bateman wife of Henry was buried there in 1770, and Henry Bateman in 1781.

Some Ramsey families seem to use the parish church at Doddington, Cambridgeshire sometimes - I'm not sure if this was because they moved back and forth across the county border, or if it was just a preference.  However, I don't think that the records are available anywhere online for the mid 1700s.

Thank you Galium. Your information is most useful and has encouraged more searches. James moved his family to Fleet which had puzzled me but may be you have provided a reason. He was there in 1851. The family's trade was bricklaying. I have failed to raise the 1841 census on my searches on Ancestry again but I have confirmed Phineas' residence from the poll book for 1818,1823 and 1841. Son Henry settled in Gedney, Lincolnshire and is my line of Bateman.

Phineas is indexed as Phineas 'Baliman' on Ancestry's 1841 transcript. 
I found this by using a free search of  the 1841 on findmypast - where his name is correctly  transcribed - from which I could see that he was in Lincolnshire.  It was then easy to find him just by searching for 'Phineas' in Lincolnshire on Ancestry.

Although some records show that he was an innkeeper, there is an apprenticeship record on Ancestry for 1801 which shows him to be a master bricklayer.

Thank you for your reply. I collected the Ramsey Parish Church records for Bateman when I visited Huntindon Record Office which I found helpful but have been unable to create a meaningful line of descent that I feel confident to accept. I feel sure that there is a connection especially as I have been assisted by your colleagues after my first posting to connect with the Phineas who became an innkeeper in Fleet. It was in the hope that someone could provide the missing information that the parish and internet searches have not yet managed for me that promted the posting.

The Phineas Bateman who died in Fleet in 1842 was proprietor of the Rose & Crown Inn Inn, Fleet. It was sold in September 1842 by the trustees of his will, George Thrower of Long Sutton and Edward Marriott of Fleet.
