POTTAGE, Leeds / Wakefield 19th C.

I am interested in the Pottage family from Leeds/Wakefield.

Ethel Pottage was born in 1895 in Leeds - siblings Arthur, Harold, Annie, Edith, Ernest, Jessie, Florence.

Her parents were John and Annie Pottage b. 1858 in Wakefield and 1863 respectively.  John's father was John Samuel Pottage (b. 1828 Tockwith).

Would love to hear from anyone with a connection or information.

Richard Pottage b.31/3/1805 - died 20/9/1887
married Sara Windas 10/11/1829 in Kingston upon Hull

I got most of my information from a family bible years ago for the Pottages and Milners -  I also got quite a bit from the Lancs and E Yorks board -  I was looking for them to just refer you on -  but they must have been moved -  I requested on both boards 22 - 23 March 2005

Just come across your message on a search for Pottage. Hope you will still be able to read this after all this time. John Samuel Pottage (b Wakefield) and Elizabeth Carr (b Tockwith) were my 2 x great grandparents. Their son James William Pottage was my direct ancestor. He was your John's younger brother. I have quite a lot of information on the family.

Their marriage certificate reads John Pottage, 26, bachelor, solicitor's clerk, Albion Street, Wakefield, son of John Samuel Pottage, tailor, married Annie Thorpe, 21, spinster, 21 Brunswick Street, Normanton, dau of Joseph Thorpe, miner, at Normanton, 28 August 1883 Witnesses James William Pottage, Elizabeth Nicholson

I have the marriage certificate of John Samuel Pottage if you still need it. The Pottage line goes back, Joseph Pottage the whitesmith and Elizabeth Riddall, John Pottage and Rachel Hope, Matthew Pottage the blacksmith and Alice Hunt, John Pottage and Mary Forth, William Pottage of Riccall 1674.

The Thomas Pottage/Elizabeth Milner line to which Liverppol Annie refers is a different line. I have got no further back than Thomas Pottage the shoemaker at the moment so would love to hear if you now have. About 80% of all the Pottages in the world are descendants of William Pottage of 1674, but not Thomas Pottage the shoemaker.
