Help - Struggling with Ruddocks!
« on: Monday 12 November 12 20:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Could anyone trace a marriage between Thomas Ruddock & Mary Ellis ???  Some of their children were baptised in Dickleburgh. Elizabeth & Maria 16th June 1799 & Thomas 13th June 1802. I am thinking it would be c1796-1799 in that area of Norfolk but I am not ruling anything out at this stage.

I am really struggling with this part of my tree as the parish records for Dickleburgh show children baptised in the period 1792-1812, some to:

a) Thomas Ruddock & Mary Allen
b) Thomas Ruddock & Mary Ellis
c) Thomas Ruddock & Mary (unknown)

I am trying to work out if there is one Thomas with two wives named Mary or two Thomas Ruddocks each with there own wife called Mary.

I have traced the marriage of Thomas Ruddock to Mary Allen in Syleham, Suffolk in 1791. It states that Thomas is from Dickleburgh so I am happy this is correct.

I now need to untangle the rest. I think I need either...  :-\
a) the wedding of Thomas and Mary Ellis to see if he is listed as a widower etc
b) the death of Mary Allen c1796 which would help to prove the 2 wives named Mary theory.
c) alternatively proof of 2 baptisms for Thomas Ruddock's in Dickleburgh area in same period.

But I can't seem to find anything  :(

Any light anyone could shed on this would be most appreciated,

Many Thanks,

Sarah

P.S Spelling of Ruddock can vary a lot ruddock/rudduck/ rudoc etc

Hi,

Keep in mind that it's not uncommon for the people recording events in Parish Registers to make mistakes especially with names, very often the events were not recorded straight away, so Mary Allen and Mary Ellis could be the same person.

Over the years and many PRs, I've seen cases of blank spaces where the first name or surname should be.  Occasionally with baptisms in my lines, after one or two previous children of the family were baptised the recorder got the mother 's first name wrong, then when the next child of that family was baptised he got it right again.

Regards.
Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

hi Sarah, on freereg, burial of Mary Ruddock 01/04/1855, age 87, takes her into the years your looking at. I think findem may be correct, there is only 1 Mary & 1 Thomas, just poor transcriptions
