Royal Artillery
« on: Monday 12 November 12 19:55 GMT (UK) »
I have not seen my grandfather named Charles Chapman since a boy, and I am sure that he long since passed away. His line is the only one missing from my family tree. I don't have a birth date for him, but I know where he lived, which was Streatham London. After having trawled many sites, I have found 2 possible birth dates, which is;

3rd April 1920
25 Nov 1919

However one thing I am sure of, is that he served with the Royal Artillery. Is there any way that anyone can discover whether there is a Charles Chapman who served in the Royal Artillery who matches one of these birth dates?

Welcome to RootsChat Tony.

Ancestry gives out quite a few Charles Chapmans born around that time. Do you have any more info - parents/wife's name etc.? Did Charles have any other names? The more info you can give, the more likely it is that we can help.

My mother (his daughter) was born 19-02-51/52 her birthname was Sheena Chapman - and I believe that she was born in Mitchum, Surrey - she is still alive but I do not know where to find her. My grandmother who was my grandfathers partner was Ellen Marshall Morrow (birthname), and although she used the name Chapman, I don't actually think they was married - she died in Oxford in November 1992 - her surname then was Cathcart/Caithcart. I was given an old picture of my grandfather by nans sister, and he was in uniform, I recognised the cap badge as being Royal Artillery.

So as you can see, my search is proving to being almost impossible thus far.

Many thanks for your response.

I think you're right about the marriage aspect. I checked your Mom's birth on FreeBMD and it gives the year as 1949, March qtr, the mother's name as Morrow, and the registration district as Hammersmith. The only other candidates of the same name were born in 1959 and 1963 - so outside your timeframe.

With so little info on Charles I can see the enormity of your task. Hopefully, someone on the board will have access to Army Records and be able to help with the Royal Artillery side of things.

Hi

I too have a similar problem.   I have a John Osbone born 1915 in Paisley (so he says) and married in 1940. His No is 863871 Royal Horse Artillery unner/Bombadier but have checked records and no record of that No. As he was born in Scotland would the records be elsewhere do you think. I know when he married he was living at 2B Minine Lines which I presume is a camp somewhere.

Thanks Pam

Hi

Thanks for that the birth may be correct I'll look tha one up. He married in Yorkshire in 1940 at Richmond. It's his service record I am after I just read that the No.s start with an L so maybe if I put that in front of his No. I may get somewhere.

Many thanks
Pam :)
