Obtaining Birth Certificate
« on: Saturday 10 November 12 20:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I recently found out that my Great-Grandfather came from county Galway. I want to get a copy of his birth certificate but have very limited information on him.

Name: Leonard Timothy O'Gara
Born: January 1922, County Galway
Fathers Name: William Patrick O'Gara

I have looked on Family Search and can't find anything on him. Will I be able to get a copy of his birth certificate with the information I have?

Thank you all. :)

Did you meant to type 1922, if so check out  http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm  not sure if just County Galway will be enough, and no mothers name but worth checking out.

If he died in Ireland or his father did it might be worth spending a bit of money on newspaper archives to see if you can find a death notice, that would hopfully give you a town or townland.

if it should be 1822 than that is a whole different kettle of fish, although you could still try the newspaper route.

I can’t see that birth listed in the Irish civil indexes for 1922 or adjacent years, anywhere in Ireland, so suspect some aspect of the information isn’t quite right.

Yes, it's 1922. He died in Australia in 2000 so there would be nothing in the Irish newspapers about him. As for his father his name and I know nothing about him except that he was a motor transport driver in 1942 which I got from Leonards marriage certificate. How would I go about looking in the newspapers?

The information I have on Leonard is from his marriage certificate and from talking to his daughter (my great aunt) so I don't know which part could be wrong.

There are only 4 O’Gara births registered in Ireland in 1922. None in Galway. One a male in Jan – Mar at Strokestown (Co Roscommon), others in Boyle (Bridget) , Castlereagh (Dominick) and Dunmanway (Peter).

Widening the search to the years 1915 – 1926, produced only a single half match – Columba Timothy Gara b Oct - Dec 1920 in Glenties (Co Donegal). (The O’ prefix is often detached in Ireland so it’s worth checking under Gara as well as O’Gara).

I also looked for William Patrick O’Gara (both for a marriage and his birth). I saw one Wm Patrick b Jan – Mar 1885 in Ballina, but who appears to have died in Ballina in 1890. Patrick O’Gara was more common and there were quite a few of those. No obvious marriage.

Searching for William Patrick O’Gara in the 1911 census, produced nil hits. There were 2 possible William O’Gara matches (of an age to father a child in 1922):

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/South_Dock/Warrington_Place/86244/

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Sligo/Kilfre/Doon/752006/

Patrick O’Gara is more common. Only one in Galway in 1911, but he was single and aged 47.

Not sure what to suggest next.

Family Search shows a Timothy O'Gara birth for Claremorris but no date so I suspect that wouldn't be relevant. There are similar O'Gara births with the same lack of information.

Claremorris is in Mayo but close to Galway. :-\
Other Claremorris births on FS look to be the children of Martin and Mary O'Gara, Corskeagh - in censuses.

Newspapers http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,437626.0.html

Sounds a bit odd but you may have better luck finding his father even his grandfather than him. He's just too recent he would be included in records of people who could still be alive so they won't be available yet.

Information actually on death certificate depends on informant's knowledge.

Ireland was once part of the U.K. so records were not/still aren't kept for people travelling between Ireland and England, Scotland and Wales.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
