old soldier

Hi, can you help.looking for greatgrandfather, from  co Tyrone ? eskerbuoy ?,he was a soldier in 1882, dont know anything about him, were would i look for army records for him as a soldier.thanks

The only records on Findmypast for a Charles McCart was discharged in 1852. Your Charles probably did not receive a pension. Can you say what he was doing/where he was in 1882?

You best bet is to discover which regiments were in that area at that time and look at the muster books in the National Archives.

i dont know a lot,about  him, i have a marrage cert for his son,1882,and says his father was a soldier, thanks for trying,i will try the national archives.

Don't discount that record for Charles McCart that was discharged in 1852.

If the only source you have is a marriage cert of the son, the occupation is listed as probably the son told it.  I also have marriage certs that list the father as a soldier, but he had been discharged many years previously.

Added: Just as a matter of interest...what was the son's name?  Are you trying to go back a generation...and all you have is the father on the MC?

The National Archives is longer the font of all knowledge it used to be. Most individual records are no longer accessible once they have been contracted out to online suppliers. If his service record has not been kept you have to discover his regiment first.

You may be better off concentrating on finding the son's birth, or those of any siblings, and hope Charles was still serving.
