RICE (Armley/Wortley - Leeds) - missing Jewish link
« on: Friday 09 November 12 10:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

My great-great aunt Mary Rice used to mention that some members of her family (possibly cousins) were Jewish tailors in Leeds.

I was wondering, using the information below, whether you might be able to delve a bit deeper and unearth something for me?

Many thanks!

----

Here's the Rice family in 1901, living at Victoria Square in Leeds. The Mary in bold is the person who mentioned her Jewish relatives.

Thomas Rice (head) 48
Mary Armstead (wife) 47
Herbert Rice 18
Vincent Rice 17
Agnes Rice (my great-grandmother) 12
Mary Rice 8
Jane Rice 6
Thomas Rice 7
Joseph Rice 1

(Frances Armstead - relation to Mary? Can't read) 37

Just found out he's her brother. That's one mystery solved... now onto the Jewish query. Might be a tougher nut to crack!

Sorry M.S forgot to put Frances was male!
The jewish connection must be through the Rice family?
Although Thomas was born in Ireland, perhaps one of his siblings married into a Jewish family hence being cousins of Mary?

Irish censuses from the mid to late 1800s seem hard to come by.

We know he was 48 in 1901, so born either 1852 or 1853 (in Kildare), but finding his siblings is proving very difficult.

Irish censuses from the mid to late 1800s seem hard to come by.

That's because they no longer exist!
Only 1901 and 1911 censuses exist for Ireland.

Nightmare!

Any hope at all of finding the siblings and parents of Thomas Rice then?  :-\

If it's Irish ancestry - then you need Parish Registers.

And for that you need to know:
1) The parish or townland from where they came.
2) Their religion.

Civil Registration in Ireland only came in in 1864, so it could be difficult! ;D

The 1911 English census seems to be the one most likely to give a more exact place of birth than the county or 'Ireland'- we aren't allowed to do lookups for 1911 census but would be worth trying if any of the family born in Ireland were listed.

Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
