Mother of the Bride
« on: Thursday 08 November 12 04:55 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please help me work out if the Mother of the Bride is the lady in the bottom left of the Picture. They were Irish immigrants to NZ and the photo is taken 1911.  The White veil style things on her dress make me feel like it could be brides mother. Also she looks like shes dark skinned but shes not. It must be a veil on her hat that is giving that appearance.

It does look as if she has a spotted veil over her face doesn't it. I've enlarged it to 330% and can't see other signs of veil so maybe it is just dirt - very hard to tell really   Seem to be too many spots only on her face (and one on the lady behind) for it to be other than veil  . . . . Hmmmm

Very odd those white things - never seen them before.

Nice photo!

Sorry, can't answer your question re relationship though!   ;)

Those white pleated fan things on her shoulders look like the little posy arrangements that some brides decorate the ends of the pews facing into the aisle with - like pleated white paper doilies usually with a few little silk flowers attached and ribbons to match the bridesmaids dresses.  Why she would be wearing such things on each shoulder is beyond me - she looks like she's barracking for her favourite footy team.

I think the spots on her face are her hat veil.

Is she the mother of the bride??? Just a thought but is she the mother of the groom? - surely is she belonged to the bride she would have been sitting on the brides side of the photo

Cheers

Maureen

Maureen I never realised there was a brides and grooms side in photos. The groom is the one in the white waistcoat and not the man with dark hair beside her. (which is the one I originally thought he was the groom)

Yes they certainly are strange and it made me wonder if they were an irish custom or maybe she was in mourning and just put them on to look a little more in the wedding theme.

Thankyou . I was very happy to receive this photo today because even if we cant work out the mother of the bride, the bride herself and the bridesmaids sitting down are both my Great Grand Aunts. A treasure we never thought to find.

My view, before you confirmed who the groom was,  is from L-R

Grandparents, father, mother, bride, groom, best man.
young girl sitting looks similar to the mother so possibly sister of the bride but no clue who the young man sitting on the right could be.

jc26red I probably would have thought exactly the same but the Grandparents didnt immigrate with the family.
I'm beginning to wonder if the dark haired man beside the bride is her brother that could be giving her away. They look very similar dont you think.

And yes the younger bridesmaid sitting down is the brides sister. That much is definite.
