I agree with Salty looking at the enhanced scan...can you make out the shoulder title on an enhanced scan is it RE?

Thank you Salty and Ady. Yes, looking at the shoulder title on the original photo with a magnifying glass, it looks like RE. Well spotted. Now I need to find out if I have got any Royal Engineers in the family.

The photo was taken at a studio in Newark, but the family is from Leicester. Does anyone know if any of the Royal Engineers were based in Newark in WW1?

Yes there was a RE depot at Newark during WW 1
