Hi there, my ancestor Arthur Esmae Carteret Green (1870-1929) won the Queens South Africa Medal with four clasps during the 2nd Boer War in South Africa in the 2nd Battalion Canadian Mounted Rifles. It doesn't state why he was awarded it on his service record. Was it just a campaign medal?

He won the Victory Medal and British War Medal during the Firat World War in the Australian Imperial FOrce. He served in WWI from 1916-1917. His service record states that he was awarded these two medalsbit doesnt state why. Would there be any records to state why? He was in the 37th Battalion 2nd Reinforcements in WWI.

Any records on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Sykes

Hi there,

You will find many AIF personnel were awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

The Victory Medal was awarded to prescribed classes of persons who entered a theatre of war on duty between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918.

The British War Medal was awarded for service in a theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Those eligible included members of women's organisations; persons on the staffs of military hospitals and members of recognised organisations who handled sick and wounded; and members of other duly recognised or other authorised organisations as specified in medal regulations. The qualification period was later extended to cover post-war mine clearance and service in Russia during 1919 and 1920.

Google found the above info.

You're lucky in that Canadian and Australian records online are pretty extensive. Seems he was previously in the NorthWest Mounted Police in Canada.
7 pages on him here:

Hello

I have been looking for information on my grandfather Henry John Johnson,  I have the Kings Medal (South Africa 1901-1902 ) i think my cousin has his Queens Medal.
Regiment number 19150, Driver, Royal Horse Artillery.

I can't find any records for him.

He was one of the children sent to Canada from Barnardo's and I am trying to find out how he returned and joined the RHA. I have tried the site neil1821 posted without any luck.

He was very small and took ten years off his age and joined up "but where" Henry spent the rest of his life working with horses they were his love.

If you have any advise where my next port of call could be I would be grateful for any idears. I have been up to Kew etc.

Regards Barbara
