Hi there, I have this picture of my ancestor, Arthur Esmae Carteret Green who was in the North West Mounted Police (1894-1899), Canadian Mounted Rifles (1900-1901) - 2nd Boer War, and the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War - served from (1916-1917).

Please could someone date this photo or at least try? Is it the Boer War or First World War. He won the Queen's South Africa Medal with four clasps during the 2nd Boer War.

Thanks :D

His jacket looks like Commonwealth Pattern jacket developed in 1912, so I would say a ww1 pic

If you haven't read his Australian Imperial Force records they are available on the Australian National

Archives web site.     http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/NameSearch/Interface/ItemDetail.aspx?Barcode=1925106

He was awarded a British War Medal and a Victory Medal while serving  for them.

Yeh i've got his service records. Is there anyway of finding out why he was awarded those two medals? Doesn't state it in his sercice records.

They were Campaign medals issued to all men who served in a theatre of War.

Yes, agree with Ady  :)  may I just note that females were eligible for the British War Medal.
