Caldwell Ballyhackamore
« on: Monday 05 November 12 16:47 GMT (UK) »
My GF Isaac Caldwell was born 1888 in Ballyhackamore, Belfast District, Castlereagh 3 according to his birth certificate.  His father was also Isaac Caldwell same dwelling, a Porter, and Mother Nellie Davidson Caldwell m.s. McKechnie.
I also have my GF's vaccination certificate dated 11th July 1888 which gives Westminster Avenue as his place of birth.
In 1890 my GF is in Carluke Scotland where his brother is born, followed by a sister in 1891, both children are registered by their father Isaac a hammerman, they are living at Nellie's parents house.
My GGF Isaac and GGM Nellie state marriage December 1889 in Motherwell Scotland, no marriage found for them.
There is no record of a death for my GGF Isaac Caldwell in Scotland who is supposed to have died before december 1899 when his mother married again and my GF gains a step father.

County Down is the only clue I have for my GGF. I wonder if anyone could please help with suggestions as to
where and how I could locate this elusive Isaac Caldwell. Thank you.

Thank you for your reply JimG.
I have looked at the
Killyleagh Isaac Caldwell was a flaxdresser, he and his wife Margaret Jane Kelly went to Providence Rhode Island in the 1890's, where he died 1909, his father was James and her father David Kelly, I think they married in 1868.
I don't think he is mine.
I found a marriage of a James Calwell to Rachel Calwell m.s. Wells a widow of Isaac Calwell, I think this was Donegal but I could not find children for either.
I am not even sure if GGF Isaac was from Down, but it was where my GF was born.
Thank you.

Westminster Avenue is just off the Holywood Road in East Belfast where it leaves the Upper Newtownards Road at a place called the "Arches".  Today, it is the entrance to a Health Centre carpark. Under 2 miles from Belfast City Centre.

The Westminster Avenue address and Isaac Senior's occupation of porter are interesting.  The Arches is so called because there used to be a railway viaduct a stone's throw away crossing the Holywood Road / Upper Newtownards Road junction.  Westminster Avenue was therefore right in the vicinity of the Belfast and County Down Railway Company line from Belfast to Newcastle and if Isaac didn't work at the Queens Quay station in Belfast, he may have worked at one of the several stations in the vicinity, such as Bloomfield or Ballymacarrett Junction. Speculative I know, but it would fit the story.

Another interesting story is in a Glasgow newspaper of 1885 which reports an Isaac Caldwell, a porter (there's that occupation again), being dragged 30 years down a railway track after being clipped by the Motherwell train at Cambuslang Station in Glasgow while crossing platforms.  He survived, albeit that he had to have a finger amputated. I wonder if he's connected...

There's a Helen Barclay McKechnie who married a James Davidson in Carluke in 1880, I wonder if this is a previous marriage for Nellie? I also notice on familysearch that Isaac Caldwell and Helen McKechnie's daughter is called Helen Barrie Caldwell, born 1891 - Barclay / Barrie - maybe a mistranscription?

Also interesting that the 1881 census for Dalziel Motherwell shows a William and Elizabeth Caldwell (born Ireland) with 5 children, one of whom is a 25 year old Isaac who is a... hammerman. Isaac and one of the siblings John are shown as born in Ireland as well.

Thank you for your reply gaffy. I do think he was connected to the Railway. The reason I say this is on the marriage certificates of my GF Isaac and his siblings Adam and Nellie they all say their father was a Railway Guard (Goods).
Helen Barclay McKecnie is my GGM, she did marry a James Davidson in Carluke, they lived at Law Junction and he was a railway Plater, he died in 1887.  I wonder if James knew Isaac snr throgh through the railway.
My GGM Helen was born in Lanarkshire, married James there and lived there.  I am thinking that as my GF was born out of wedlock and his father was from Ireland he wanted his child born there, or maybe the shame for Helen?
GGM Helen had her GM's maiden Barclay, her daughter Helen had her GM's maiden name Barrie.  Traditional thing in Scotland, all of my siblings have family names, as has my grandchildren.  Sometimes this helps in tracing ancestors.
The Glasgow newspaper 1885 I followed up, everything seemed to fit.  I sent to NHS archives for the hospital report which gave me Rosebank Place Cambuslang as his abode, a place not so far from Carluke or Motherwell but I never was able to trace him after that.
William Caldwell and Elizabeth Irwin (father John Irwin a carpenter) married 20/7/1875 in Drumachose Newton Limavady.  William's father was Isaac Caldwell a drover, and mother Margaret Dollas (daulus) who died 1903 in Motherwell Scotland.  William and Elizabeth in 1876 had twins born Cambuslang Scotland, Isaac and Matilda Jane died at 10 weeks.
William's brother Isaac on 1881 cencus married a Jane Watson in Motherwell 1879.  I found in 1891 an Isaac with son James age 12 lodging with the Paterson family in Motherwell, I beleive he is Jane's husband and son named after her father.  Oh dear I have so much knowledge of this family but can not connect it to me!!  Thank you for the westminster avenue details.  That was another thing I done, I tried to get railway records connected to my GGF, none exist for his time frame.  Many thanks gaffy.

Gaffy, I have concentrated my efforts on any Isaac Caldwell in Ireland.  I found an Isaac Caldwell who died 27/6/1874 in Legnaniel registered in district Castlefin, Union of Strabane age 80, a farmer widower, registered by Violette Caldwell.
There was something in the befast newspaper relating to a court case regarding a will of Isaac, between Violette Graham (her maiden name as she was widowed from son Archibald a Farmer who died age 46 15/5/1874), and Moore who was Isaac's daughter contesting it. All the assets were given to Violette and son William in USA. There appears to be 2 daughters Isabella and Catherine and 2 sons Archibald and William.  The Belfast newspaper info was given to me and I sent to rosscommon for the death certificates!!
I have not posted on Donegal as I know for sure that Ballyhackamore is the area my GF and his parents were.
Thank you
