Wass family Stoke by Nayland Suffolk
« on: Monday 05 November 12 13:45 GMT (UK) »
My GG Grandfather Henry Wass was born in Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk in 1844.  In 1861 he was a potman and in 1881 he was a beer keeper (both in London).

Whilst researching I came accross George Wass a licensed victualler around the same time in a very well known pub in London (The Archway Tavern) that is still open for business today.  George Wass was also from Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk (although born some 20 years earlier).

Does anyone know how popular the surname Wass was in Suffolk around this time so I can determine if it is worthwhile searching for a connection between the two.

Thanks.

Hmmm, whether it is a common name,or not, they are either linked, or not.
Most probably are, as come from the same place.
Shouldnt be too difficult to trace George back and see, as all in census era.

So - where did you see George? So we have a starting point

It seems thats George.. Well done you.

I hadn't found George on the census, I found him on a 'old London pubs' type website, just came by him by chance.

Henrys dad was Robert Wass, born about 1797.
