CURRAN - Trickvallen, Ardboe, Co Tyrone
« on: Monday 05 November 12 03:24 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find my great grandfather James CURRAN (2) baptised on 22nd February 1858 by Fr Charles Montague in Mull(a/i)nahoe, Parish of Ardboe.  Sponsors are listed as Hugh Donnelly and Margaret Quinn.  James's parents were James CURRAN (1) and Margaret DONNELLY.

James CURRAN (2) migrated to GLASGOW and married Bridget MCCAFFERTY (of Lanark) in 1883.  He died August 1930 less than 2 years after Bridget.  They had 9 or 10 children of whom only 3 survived and only 1 (my grandmother) gave birth to any children.

Any information would be greatly appreciated  :)

Wow, that could be them!  My grandmother knew little of her father's heritage so we don't even know if James had any brothers or sisters.  How did you find out about the marriage?

Thanks so much for a quick response.

There is a marriage between a James Curran and a Margaret Donnelly in Glasgow but the date is 17 Jan.1862-
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTBP-XZG

The same site also lists children whose parents are the same names- might be another couple but worth keeping in mind-
Elizabeth born 9 Sept.1862
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ3F-VD7
Susan born 29 Nov.1862 Milton
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQQV-SS7
Eliza Ann born 13 Jan.1865 Milton
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ63-8WG
James born 10 Jan.1866 Eastwood
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQXL-J3L
Catherine born 21 Mar.1868
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ3V-C72
Daniel Donnelly born 27 Aug.1870
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ5L-72N
James born 12 Sept.1873
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQNX-T8N
Joseph Andrew born 26 Feb.1881 Gorbals
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTXD-CB6

If the first two dates are correct it would seem that there are at least 2 James Currans married to a Margaret Donnelly

Briefly checking a few Scottish records find the following-

1901 Census- 168 South Wellington St.
James Curran 60 Ireland tailor; wife Margaret 58 Ireland; James 27 Glasgow; Joseph Andrew 20; John 16.

20 years earlier this family give more exact birthplace-
1881 Census- 92 Govan St.
James Curran 40 Co.Donegal tailor; wife Margaret 40; Patrick 19 Donegal; Catherine 13; Daniel 11; James 7;Margret 5; Mary 2; Joseph Andrew 5 weeks.

James CURRAN (2) migrated to GLASGOW and married Bridget MCCAFFERTY (of Lanark) in 1883.
What is listed for father's occupation on the marriage certificate?

At the time of James (b1858) and Bridget's marriage Sep 1883 in Glasgow, James Curran (the father) was alive and working as an engineer labourer but the mother Margaret Curran (nee Donnelly) was deceased.  I don't know whether James's parents came to live in Glasgow or not but now I'm thinking they might as Susan was a very popular Curran name and Milton is the area most of them came from!

It's exciting that I might have a breakthrough and all thanks to your help which is much appreciated.

Many thanks and I'll post if and when I know more :-)

Removing the children of James Curran (tailor) from the list I posted earlier leaves these births as possibilities-

Elizabeth born 9 Sept.1862
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ3F-VD7
Susan born 29 Nov.1862 Milton
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQQV-SS7
Eliza Ann born 13 Jan.1865 Milton
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQ63-8WG
James born 10 Jan.1866 Eastwood
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQXL-J3L

Suggest next stage would be to see if you can find any of these children in Scottish census records to find parents' names. Also, check to see if you can find your James & Margaret in census records.
