Mary Jane Black born 1864
« on: Sunday 04 November 12 21:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out what happened to a Mary Jane Black born 5th Oct 1864, her parents were a William Black and Harriet Grdon. She was born in Foveran Aberdeenshire.

I know she married a James Duff Dawson and in the 1911 census it is showing they had a daughter Harriet Gordon Dawson. The reason I am trying to find out about Mary Jane is because I believe it may lead to find out what happened to her husband who I have been advised could well ahve been my grandfather as it is believed he may have had an affair with my grandmother, I don't know for certain as my dad's father was not named on his birth certificate.

James was born in Udny Aberdeenshire in 1871.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You haven't given any details of when the child was born - pre or post 1911

Is James with his family on the 1911 census?  If so - have you checked for a death for him on Scotlands People after 1911?

If not with his family - is Mary shown as a widow or married?

Hi

yes he was with his family on the 1911 census and I have found out he had a farm in Fearn (Fern) in the late 1920s but it is from there that the trail goes cold.

Any help much appreciated

Thanks

Hi Joshua01

On another forum, someone posted this information last year:

I have now found out that James' daughter Harriet Gordon Dawson left for the Cape of South Africa on the 9th September 1930. Her boat the Ubena departed from Southampton.
www.GenesReunited.co.uk/boards/board/living_relatives/thread/1282499

Given that there is no further details showing in Scotland for Harriet, and so far, nothing showing on the death index for mother Mary Jane Black/Dawson, a possibility that mother and father (?) may have left Scotland post the 1920s with their daughter? I do not have access to manifests for SA but worth checking on the various sites that do such as www.findmypast.co.uk/passengerListPersonSearchStart.actionwww.findmypast.co.uk/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action  Just from the free searches for example, there is an entry from 1933 for a Mary J Dawson born c. 1865 arriving at Cape SA from Liverpool. No idea if this is connected as I have no access to the original image.

Monica  :)

PS: From another of your posts here on RootsChat...you are Fergus? Your post on GR then? Have you tried searching for mother or father on the manifests to SA?
