WW1 service in all three branches
« on: Sunday 04 November 12 19:31 GMT (UK) »
My wife's grandfather, born 1898 in Cork, apparently served in the Army, the Royal Navy and the RFC during WW1.  Post-war, he lived, married and died in West London.  Not certain whether he left Ireland before WW1, and if so, where he enlisted.  His surname was Williams - pretty common - and a search of Army records is inconclusive.  I have not yet had an opportunity to consider RN or RFC/RAF records.  Does anyone have any experience of subjects serving in all three branches?  Was this common, or even likely?   Assuming he had not deserted and re-enlisted under a new identity, would there be a common service number?  Any advice would be welcome.
