Identify Year of this 'Dundee Pleasure' Photo
« on: Sunday 04 November 12 16:36 GMT (UK) »
I came across this old photo of my grandfather, Frederick John Heathfield, standing alongside a bus on which is inscribed the words 'Dundee Pleasure....'  This photo could throw some light on when one of my other relatives, Jeanie Gray Johnstone Thomson (Fred's wife's sister), moved to Dundee to work as telegraphist at Dundee Tay Bridge Station.

Can anyone throw any light on when this photo might have been taken? Frederick was born in 1892 and could be about 40 in this photo - however the photo is in very poor condition which doesn't help with trying to view fine detail. My relatives all lived in the Gourock area and I haven't been able so far to find out when Jeanie Gray Johnstone Thomson moved from Gourock to Dundee. It is known for certain that she was living at 21 Ashbank Road in Dundee on 3 May 1940 (from her fathers death certificate) and that she lived there for most of her life thereafter till shortly before she died in 1981.

Friends of Dundee City Archives have this document http://www.fdca.org.uk/pdf%20files/YJReg%206001to7000.pdf

....which lists a 26 Seater Opel Coach registered to Dundee Pleasure Services, Fairfield Road, Dundee.
The coach is listed as "Brown & Orange" - licence Plate YJ 6259, first registered in 23rd Sept 1938.

Brown & orange is possible for the photo; if any coach guru can positively identify this as a 26-seat Opel then we have something to go on.
NEILSON - Erskine/Bishopton, Renfrewshire and Glasgow
BROWN - Hamilton, Lanarkshire
CAIRNS - Hamilton, Lanarkshire
FINDLAY - Kirriemuir area, Forfarshire/Angus
PORTER - Tobermore, Derry, Ireland

Many thanks for that link, you've been a big help! It looks as if the photo could not have been earlier than 1938 based on the Dundee vehicle registration records you referred me to. I looked at all the earlier YJ registrations and also some of the earlier TS registrations. Based on the logo on the bus (DPS) I'm fairly certain that it is a Dundee Pleasure Services bus, especially as the words "Dundee Pleasure..." also appear in the photo. I also checked some of the registration records after that but have not yet found other buses registered to DPS after the one you found. This suggest DPS may have been a short lived venture, but I will research all the records till I get to the end!  I was not aware of the FDCA website and I'm sure I will find it very useful with my future researches, thanks for that.
