There is a marriage of a Caroline E Beagley on FreeBMD in 1915, Hartley Wintney RD, spouse George Hicks.

Worth following up?

Thanks Nell - yes had a look at this and am still not sure?   Why would Caroline change her name from C Mary to E?.    I had a death for a Caroline E Hicks in Chatham in 1966 aged 71 which could fit the bill but again she is Caroline E

Do you have the birth certificate?

There is no compulsion to keep using the same names - people are allowed to use whatever names they like provided there is no intention to defraud.  Perhaps she didn't like whatever the original M stood for, and chose E instead.

Equally she may never have used the M again, simply becoming Caroline.

Thanks Little Nell.   I had noticed also that in the 1901 census she is known as "Cassy" (Dorothy???)   She was registered at birth as "Caroline Mary" her mothers names.

I have sent for her Marriage cert so hopefully that will clear it up

I think Caroline Mary Beagley was my Grandmother. She married my Grandfather Clarence Burden under the name of Kathleen M Beagley in Wombwell , South Yorkshire. They had 3 children Dorothy, Elizabeth (Betty) and Charles. We've been tracing the family tree for a number for years but hit a
brick wall with her details as she admitted on her deathbed that she had married under a false name.

We were led to believe she was estranged from her family. Fathers name had been transcribed as EVAN on Marriage certificate but the copy of the original shows his name was Esau and was a carpenter which has, eventually, led us to your posts.
