Ulster Covenant Signing

Why would someone put their address on the Ulster Covenant records as Elmwood Church? I presume that this is Elmwood Presbyterian Church now Elmwood Hall at Queens. Did they have a place of residence there in 1912?

Hi,
   Perhaps the Covenant was signed in the church hall and someone was confused about the address and added the church as the address instead of their own.

Three people cited Elmwood Church / Elmwood Presbyterian Church on the Covenant, Herbert Russell, Joseph Russell, and Sara Jane Russell.

The minister of Elmwood Church at the time would have lived at Elmwood Manse, a short walk away at University Terrace.

Maybe they were visitors to the Manse and used the church name out of convenience? Or perhaps there were lodgings for visitors in or attached to the church itself?

The 1910 street directory on the Lennon Wylie site shows the church (and school) as the first property on the left hand side of Elmwood Avenue, it then makes reference to a William John Gordon being the Sexton of the church before referring to property no. 2, inhabited by an Alex Wallace.

The 1911 Ireland Census for Elinwood Avenue shows the 2nd property enumerated as being inhabited by Alex Wallace, the third property enumerated being the church, but also a property annexed to / contained within property 2 (called 2.1 / 2a) in which is living one William John Gordon.

My guess is that this was right beside the church and owned / rented by the church - another possibility for where the Russells were staying in 1912.

1911 census shows the Russell family here- the family are listed as Presbyterian so perhaps they just put down the name of their church rather than their actual residence:
