Anguish Lake all four(five) of them

Hi,
     I have four or possibly five generations of Lakes with the christian name Anguish. All from around Docking in Norfolk. Has anyone any clue where such a strange name came from. Would also love to hear from anyone else who has these gentlemen in their tree.

 John Lake (possibly Anguish) born @1750 Married a Ann Hall

 His Son Anguish Born 1777 Married Susanna Mitchley

 His Son Anguish Thomas Born 1814 married Lucy Smith

 His Son Anguish Born 1839 Married Emma Ringer

 His Son Walter was My GGrandad didn't have any Anguishs siblings in the family that I can find

 But He called one son Angus ( or so everyone always thought)

If you look at NORCAT and put Anguish into the quick search you will find that it is most commonly a surname and some of the Anguishes lived in the Docking area.

There is a will for Anguish Lake of Warham All Saints in 1793

Free reg has some Leake's marrying Anguishes in Warham in the early 18th century Robertus Leake and Anna Anguish 11 July 1720 All Saints and Johannes Leake  and Elizabetha Anguish 12 January 1707 St Mary's. Are these possible ancestors?

Hi Dave - your ancestors are the same as mine here.  Anguish and Lucy were my GGGG Grandparents - I'm descended via their eldest, Mary, who married James Callaby on Xmas day 1860.

Did you know that our Anguish was a criminal. 3 months for larceny in 1842 and 3 years for sheep stealing in 1854- served in Norwich castle (the only prison in the area). He was lucky he wasn't deported for a repeat offence, as happened just a few years earlier.

Have you seen the will at all of (his probable grandad) Anguish Lake? Would be interested to know what he left!

  Hi to my 5Th cousin?? Never could work that out. I had found out about our ancestors slightly dodgy past, Have you seen that in the 1851 census he is also in jail. It takes a bit of digging as the name is entered as Thomas Lake. I was getting completely confused as I couldn't find him in 1851, but Lucy was stating that she was married, not widowed. If you look for Thomas Lake in Little Walshingham you will find him. I couldn't find any record of why he was there in 1851. I think that we are very lucky or unlucky not to be Aussie.

Well done on the super sleuthing with the 1851 census. He really was a naughty boy. Can't say I fancy the tread wheel in walsingham house of correction. No wonder he died in his 40s... I must go visit that next time I'm up in Norfolk as my grandparents still live in the area.

Hi Dave, while doing a search for another rootchatter, I came across this in the parish register & Archdeacons transcripts (familysearch) Tatterford, Anguish Lake's marriage 21/09/1747 to Anne Hull...or maybe Hall. I see you have a Ann Hall mentioned on your lookup,If this is the same couple then his birth has to be about 1727 & not 1750. If 1750 is right, then you may have number 6, hope this makes sense, Dave.
