"...Still being called "Howlett" in 1881" - now thats pretty obvious when you say it like that!  Apologies for missing the completely obvious there!  Thanks for all the extra pointers you've found and listed there all very helpful.

South Cliff Tramway was a funicular tramway linking the esplanade to the beach and had only been open 6 years when your man was working there,pic here:-
