Thanks for the information ciderdrinker.  Are you saying that the other children would be Mary's siblings?  Also, what is the number after their names?  What the "n" stand for?  If the numbers are their ages they don't seem to add up?  I can't thank everyone enough for all your efforts.

In 1841 the census asks the question if born in County,in this case Warwickshire & the answer would be Y or N.As you can see they all answer n for no which is correct as they were born in Staffs.
Also in 1841 ages for people over 15 were rounded down to the nearest five years so Martha would be aged 30-34.
Like Ciderdrinker I can't find any other Mary with a father Joseph born around the right time so this is probably her.
No relationship was given in 1841 so one has to make the assumption that they are siblings.
IGI has them in Hanley, parents Joseph & Martha.

Martha didn't die in 1859 as she appears in 1861 Ladywood B'ham

Gee, not sure on Mary Thornicroft.  According to her grave stone she was born 16 FEB 1829.  The Mary here was baptised 23 Feb 1828 a year before she was born.  Any thoughts?

An anomoly certainly but IGI is a guide only & there's no substitute for viewing the Parish Registers. The transcriber could be right or could be a year out also the person supplying the information on the gravestone.
The Mary Ciderdrinker found is the only one in B'ham & she does have a father Joseph.
As Joseph doesn't appear in the census we don't know his occupation which might help.
Mary's marriage cert. will give it & Elizabeth's 1843 birth cert.If the same then it's unlikely to be any other family.

you can order BMD certs. online from the GRO:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
You need Mary's marriage & Elizabeth's birth as she's the link to Joseph.
You need to quote the name;registration district;the year;the quarter & the ref. no.
Mary's marriage is Dec.1845/Aston/16/382
Elizabeth Thornicroft's birth is March 1843/Birmingham/16/284
