Lowders of Bath
« on: Thursday 01 November 12 19:35 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know how I should get started tracing a John Lowder, Esq Jr of Lansdowne Place in Bath?  He married a Mary D'Oyly (whose D'Oyly family is written down to the nth degree) in May 1804 but John himself seems to have sprung out of the woodwork.  I haven't even been able to find John Esq Sr, which does seem to be the logical next step....
Thanks!

Hi, there is baptism of a William Lowder at Walcot St Swithin, Bath, 21 Oct 1786 parents John and Anne Lowder. Father described as Esq.
Wonder if this could be same parents for your John, although no record on FreeReg for him.

Baptism for a John Lowder in 1811 parents John and Mary, also a Louisa Anne 1805, Charles Doyley John 1806, Mary Henrietta 1807, John Thomas 1808, Anne Glass D 1810, Frederic 1821 all with John and Mary Lowder as parents.

If you do a search using the soundex there is a John Loder 1788 Ss Peter and Paul, Bath. Parents John and Barbary Loder.

Hi,

Found this snippet from the Gentlemans Magazine ,

1810, Obituary :  Aged 72, John Lowder esq. an eminent banker in Bath.

There is also this from 1817 (is this your John ?)

The New National School at Bath begun in October 1816 is already finished and opened. The plan of the building, which can hold 1000 children is entirely novel and reflects great credit to the architect John Lowder Esq. The boys schoolroom is apolygon of 32 sides, 80ft diameter and 20ft high. The girls is circular, and 54ft in diameter. The whole building was erected without the aid of scaffolding.

These could be his parents, found the info. online,

John Lowder born   12 Oct 1737    Southampton, Hampshire
died    14 May 1810    Bath, Somerset

He married Anne Glass:  1 May 1778    St Mary Arches, Exeter.

It also states that he was a naval officer. When he retired he  bought a piece of land on Lansdowne Hill, Bath. There he built a house, which was the beginning of Lansdowne Crescent,  and moved his family from Southampton. It also states (not by names) that he had several sons and daughters

Other Children, possible siblings of John:

Charles bn: 1789 Bath, Somerset . Died: Sep 1876 Frome, Somerset. Occupation: Banker.
Following Charles marriage  the birth of his children were all recorded as being born at 'the West Wing, Landsdown Crescent, Bath'.

Hi Claire - As far as the architect aspect goes - I had in my head that that was a different branch of the family, but I can't find where in my head I had made that determination (and I have been sorting through the grey matter)!  So maybe he was, and thanks for pointing me in that direction.  It does sound like a rather odd building for a school, I have to say.

In the death notices in the Worcester Herald of 23rd May 1829 is the death at Grove House, near Liverpool, of Elizabeth, wife of Wm Kay Esq., and youngest daughter of the late John Lowder Esq., of Bath, banker and also the death at Exmouth of John Lowder Esq., of the Chape House, Lansdown Crescent, second son of the said John Lowder Esq.

Hi Claire -
I do believe you absolutely pointed me in the right direction with the architect suggestion, thank you so much!  I found in Gye's Bath directory of 1819, J Lowder, architect of Chapel House, Lansdown Grove!  Moral of the story - never trust the grey matter filing system!  :D
