Hi, I'm shocked to have just found a death notice for my great x 4 grandfather (John Smith born c1799 Scotland, commercial traveller by trade) on the Watt Library online. My reason for being shocked is that he died in Moscow USSR! It says 'John Smith, formerly of Greenock died at his son's, Moscow USSR on 17/02.1878 aged 79'. This appeared in the Greenock Telegraph on 26/02/1878. I then found several more of his family members being born, getting married & dying in Moscow, here's two more -
'Ann Elizabeth, daughter of Mr & Mrs James Smith, grand-daughter of late John Smith,Greenock to William George Peet at Anglican Church of St Andrew, Moscow on 08.09.1899.(British date 20.09). (GreenockTelegraph 21.09.1899)' and 'Richard Smith, formerly of Greenock, died at 3 Hills Gate, Moscow on 2nd February 1902 age
80. Obituary p2. 11.2.1902. (Greenock Telegraph7.2.1902)'
No wonder I couldn't find them on the UK census returns! If anyone gets a chance to have a look for the obituary especially (there should be more information in that) I would be very grateful please. Many thanks.
