There is a passport application for a Ferdinand Maier from 28 Dec. 1903. It says he was born in Venhaus (the first letter looks like a V, but could be Neuhaus?) near Stuttgart, Germany on 9 Jan. 1863. He came to the US on the Edam from Rotterdam, arriving 26 Nov. 1881 and had resided in the US since then. He was naturalized in the Superior Court of New York City on 12 Oct. 1888. He was a mason and living at 930 Westchester Avenue in New York City. He was 5'3" tall with grey eyes and blond hair.
A 1923 passenger list which should be available on
www.ellisisland.org shows the same Ferdinand travelling to New York with his wife Dorothy. They were living at 972 Boston Rd., Bronx, NY.
This appears to be them in 1930 -

www.italiangen.org has a Ferdinand Maier who died at age 74 in the Bronx on 13 Jul. 1937 - thought that might be a possibility, as Dorothy appears to be widowed by 1940 -
